Visit échillais city

Built in the XII century on vestiges of IX century, the Church of Échillais is one of the Chiefs of Romance work of art Saintongeais.

Its frontage, richly decorated, is to be contemplated with the setting sun.

Sculptures decorate the plank and the higher cornice: you can see there modillons like characters playing of the hurdy-gurdy, olifant, jugglers, animals of Échillais…

On the left of the gate of entry, a capital represents a monster called " Large Goule" , which seems to swallow the barrel of the column.

The apse with the worked capitals is also admirable.

Classified building, the Church of Échillais profits from a night lighting.

It is one of the many villages in extreme cases of the Commune. In addition to the farm and the middle-class house which compose it, it has an oak grove.

The writer Pierre LOT, in his childhood, remained there in friends of his family. He reports us delicious memories in his book " The Novel of a enfant".

He invites us, still to follow it, to admire celebrates it ox well, and to dream, like him, in the wood of holm oaks centenaries.
