Dunkerque carnival

Each year, between the months of January and March, carnivalists meet ... The story of the Dunkirk Carnival began like this ...

At the beginning of the 18th century, on the occasion of the departure of the sailors for fishing in Iceland, the owner offered the "foye", a festival for fishermen. At that time all the festivities took place in an inn.

Then, little by little, towards the end of the century, the men of the sea and their families disguised themselves and invaded the streets of the city.

If the Carnival and the departure of the fishermen did not always correspond on the calendar, the two traditions became intertwined over time. It is the birth of the "Vissherbende", the band of fishermen. From the beginning of the 19th century, the port of Dunkirk already displayed one of the most original Carnivals in France!
