A medieval city coveted by the English

Mennetou-sur-Cher, located in the department of Loir-et-Cher, is a medieval city founded in the late sixth century by the daughter of Clotaire who established a monastery destroyed by the Norman invasions of the tenth century. Mennetou-sur-Cher draws its name "monastellum" small monastery.

In 1212 against the attacks of the English King John against Philip II Augustus, Hervé Bourges II strengthens the city which can resist. However in 1356, during the Hundred Years War, Mennetou fall into the hands of English. There are still many vestiges of the medieval period: three gateways of square plan, defensive towers, some elements of the enclosure, an Angevin Gothic barn and part of the Benedictine priory dating from 1202.
