Gavarnie

Located in the Pyrenees, Gavarnie is a small village of mountain (approx. 1400 m high) at the border with  Spain. The gave of Pau named gave of Gavarnie here takes its source there, in the middle of the national park of the Pyrenees. This is the Large high Cascade of its 422m. In 1997, the solid mass of Mont-Perdu which belonged the circus of Gavarnie was classified with the world heritage of UNESCO with the double title of natural and cultural landscape.

• Chapel D’héas

Filled up the stories and of legends, destroyed and rebuilt by three times, it is in the middle cultural world heritage.

Opened every day, in free access, of May 1 to November 1, it shelters every Sunday at 11 a.m. a mountain mass. Each year, on August 15 and on September 15, pilgrimage of the valley of Barège with Gavarnie.

• Church of Gavarnie

Set up by the monks of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem to the 12th century, the church shelters vestiges of the medieval time: furniture of the 15th century, statue… It is on one of the routes leading to St-Jacques de Compostelle.

• Mills of Gèdre-Top

These mills are the testimony of an ancestral activity in harmony with the environment. Guarantors of a rural and mountain authenticity, they are to be discovered with the hamlet of Gèdre-Top, Moule Dera, on the gave of Campbieil. Five, they belong to various families of the village. They were still used in the Seventies and one among them even turned until 1985.

• Rule of the Count Russel

At the entry of the village of Gavarnie, admire the bronze statue of famous Pyrénéiste, born in 1834, which devoted its life to the Pyrenean exploration.

He wrote the most beautiful pages of the so singular history of Vignemale (3 298 m), plus French high summit of the Pyrenees.

• Notre Dame of snows

Placed on a rock piton to 1.519 m high, the statue takes care on the life of the mountain dwellers since 1927. It is the work of the sculptor tarbais Michelet and was transported by 50 volunteers of Gavarnie.

• Hydroelectric station

The most important hydroelectric factory of the Hautes-Pyrénées saw its building sites lasting from 1947 to 1953 on the commune of Gèdre.

National example of technique of recovery of water, true technical exploit, Pragnères includes 40 km of galleries, 4 stoppings of which that of Cape de Long, close to Néouvielle which is largest of the Pyrenees, a power station of production and 2 pumping stations. The power station is intended to provide electricity to the rush hours.
