Small commune of the canton of Payrac, it is stretched along several roads which make it possible to go in various places: Gourdon, Lamothe-Fénelon, Saint Julien de Lampon, Mareuil, Fajoles. The village is camped on a hill dominating with the N.E the valley of Tournefeuille and the plate where the commune extends of Nadaillac-de-Rouge.

The origin of Masclat is extremely old and could go up, according to certain indications, at the time mérovingienne.

In the middle of the village: the Castle, old den under the seigniory of Cardaillac then of Thémines at the 14th century, occupied by English of 1355 to 1362, it was rebuilt at the next century. The building is with the state of “old hovel” in 1856. The repair of the roofs will allow its safeguard.

Many lords or Co-lords followed one another the liking of alliances and transactions. We will find in particular various families: OF MASSAUT, Of AURIOLE, OF BLANCHEFORT, OF MAREUIL, OF FONTANGES.

The castle will be sold with the biddings in 1859 and will be allocated to Mr. PLANCHOU, owner and mayor of Masclat. Resold recently, it belonged a long time to family PEBEYRE originating in Masclat.

Beautiful building, built around a high square tower, the principal main building is flanked of two round towers (end 15th century) truncated but still equipped with drain-holes, the third round tower, with the back of the building, places the spiral staircase. On the left, in the court, the old “attic of the castle” was used as inn of 1919 to 1960.

Visit Milhac

visit-milhac

The commune of Milhac, administratively attached to the canton of Gourdon, the Western North of the Department of the Batch, is bordering with Périgord.

Located in geographical space called “Bouriane”, pertaining to Quercy (country of the oaks), is a true oasis between Causse of Gramat and Périgord Noir and offers to the glance a landscape covered soft hills of pines, chestnuts, and holm oaks, in the shade of which emerge from famous boletus the shortly of the rains, and laughing valleys, giving the spectacle of a habitat scattered, made houses and farms with the brown tiled roofs, and well cultivated fields.

The grounds are sandy and so easy there to work that an ass could draw the plough. Certain authors see in this possibility of “ass ploughing” the origin of the name of the area.

Two small brooks, Melve and its affluent Relinquière, curve through fields, which formerly fed from the mills now transformed into residence of summer.

The old part of the village, called the “High Barry”, is the survival of a glorious past with its castle surrounded by some beautiful old houses, of a strengthened church of its presbytery, and of an any covered small house of roofing stones, culminates in south-east on a cliff of 60 meters to the top of Relinquière.

The whole of the site is particularly gravitational and the requests to come to settle there cannot be all satisfied.

Visit Payrac

visit-payrac

Payrac, which owes its name with the occitan “peyro” which means “stones”, was already an important borough at the time of Roman peace.

The oldest writing mentioning the village goes back to Xth century. Terrible military campaigns, plunderings and destruction of the One hundred Year old war, as well as the plague of 1347 test the population, so that the area finishes almost uninhabited. Many peasants limousins, auvergnats, then come to repopulate the borough, under the impulse of the local lords.

After new devastations brought by the wars of religion (500 died in Payrac in 1589 in the Protestant army), Payrac, which from time immemorial benefitted from its site privileged on the axis Paris-Toulouse, knows an economic revival which makes a rich and prosperous city of it.

Unfortunately the Industrial revolution leaves Payrac side, which will lose more half of its population in one century

Visit Calès

visit-cales

It is in 930 that appears the name of HOLDS. The parish was then given to the abbey Saint Martin de Tulle.

The Village knew many vicissitudes. It undergoes plunderings and exactions on behalf of the English in the middle of the 14th century. The wars of religion do not save it and in fact then the troops of brigands and the plague prevail.

During the 19th century the village is repopulated and the population draws its resources from the vine until its disappearance because of the phylloxera.
