Lombez

Lombez, small village of 1700 inhabitants, welcomes you around its cathedral and its historical centre, while being stretched along the boulevard of the Pyrenees in Prat Béziau, the road of Samatan, St Adour and Montadet, and in its many allotments, the City of the Beavers, the City of Ribère, Ramondère I, II and III.

A village turned towards its cathedral

Until the French revolution, the territory of bishop's palace included in south-west the market and the site of the houses until the angle of the street of Barry Neuf (where the gate was the entry of the episcopal palate in north and in south the block of houses delimited by the streets of the Church, of the Outfall and the Mill.

All the houses of the village were built along the two streets Notre-Dame and Long street ( today street Jean Moulin and street of the Republic) all frontages looking in the south, towards the cathedral.

With the difference of the other villages where the market throne in the center of the borough, that of Lombez was built in first half of the XIXth century, with the site of the court of the Menagerie and the stables of old évêché.

The square of the cathedral and the market play a big role today at the time of the cultural and commercial events of the summer.

Treasure of Lombez

Exposed in the baptistry, the treasure is composed of pyxides, ciboria, cross of procession out of rock crystal and other sacerdotal objects. Until 2002, it also included the “arm” of Saint-Majan, relic of the founder of the city. Unfortunately, this one was catch, depriving Lombez of the most priceless part of its treasure…

Romance baptismal tank

The lead tank of the baptismal font dates from XIInd and XIIIrd century. the famous reason in two parts of the scenes of religious life on the lower part and a scene of hunting on the high plank. The two reasons have this characteristic not to be not same time. Indeed, the potters frequently re-used existing models to carry out the mouldings.

This Greek monk arrived at Lombez at the VIIth century. He cured the patients and returned the sight to the blind men. Its memory is celebrated each 1st Sunday of June by a dedicated procession and songs. He died towards the year 611 and its worship is attested in Lombez as of the Middle Ages.

In 2009, thanks to the financial aid of the Foundation of the Inheritance, the table of St-Majan was renovated and its celebrated installation on Saturday June 6 at 15:00, followed traditional procession to the Vault.

Subscriptions for the Foundation of the Inheritance could be versed (desfiscalisation with 66%) for the handing-over with nine of the vault in the cathédfale which shelters the renovated table. Application forms are to be withdrawn with the cathedral, with the Trade union of Initiative and with the Town hall: example of subscription, for 100 € poured, that will cost you only 34 € and you will help with the revival of our cathedral!
