Trévoux

With its remarquable setting, on the left bank of the River Saône, facing the Beaujolais and not far from Lyon, Trévoux is a small town with a famous historical background.

Being the Capital of the Dombes Principality, its heritage is altogether cultural (Trévoux dictionary and journal, natural (the panorama, the river·) and industrial (the drawplate museem).

 Built as an amphitheatre along the costal border of the Dombes, before it was joined in France in 1762, Trévoux was the capital principality, the center of the Dombes Parliament.

The old town forms a block of architectural interest. In the central part, formely closed by the triangle of the city walls, multi-storeyed houses cling to the steep coast. 

In the 18th century, the members of Parliament built their town houses outside the walls.

Actions to protect and develop the streets of Trévoux led for several years have permitted to give them a charm appreciated by tourists.

 The Dombes Parliament created by François the 1st in 1523 was installed, first in Lyon and later in these walls in 1696, when Duc du Maine had the Trévoux Parliament built and compelled magistrates to reside in the town. Together with the other Parliaments in France, it ceased work 75 years later.

A celling french, painted by Pierre Paul Sevin as well as portraits of Duc du Maine, attributed to Rigaud and the members of this parliament ornate the court-room, where the magistrate's court now seats.

Trévoux took advantage of its situation near Lyon, ans its independent and privilege status of a principality to develop industries and specific activities. Thus it became a European publishing center in the 18th century but also a city minting coins and warping precious metals.

The castle dominates the Dombes plateau and the Saône valley, offering an outstanding point of view from the top of its octogonal keep.

One of the 3 towers, the octogon tower, has a fairly rare original feature with its byzantine-style building, its lines and its strata of 2 differently-coloured materials.

The listed monument was much renovated in 1993.

In Trévoux, besides a particular sun-shining period and the attraction of the spot, many activities can be practised. 

• Many activities

Trévoux enjoys 2 stadiums (for football and rugby), a covered swimming pool, a tennis complex and a gymnasium. French typical spots such as "pétanque" and "boule lyonnaise" (both bowl games) can be practised on special grounds along the river Saône. Besides, a rowing activity is organised on the river.

• Fishing/Angling

Fishing is a traditionnal activity in Trévoux. It can naturally be practised in the river Saône, but also on the Chamalan lake. A more unusual and sporting fishing has been developping for a few years : big game and more precisely silurid fishing.

Both adults and children will manage to find suitable activities and practise them by themselves or within one of the many cultural or sports clubs.

• Walking/Rambling/Rides

Both the region of the "Pays de Dombes" with its thousand lakes and the region of "Beaujolais" can be discovered mountain biking from Trévoux. There are also arrowed rambling tours and for bikkers the "GR" (official trail) runs across the town.

• Watersport centre

On the opposite bank of the river Saône, "Anse" town has developped a center for aquatic sports; It's possible to practise windsurfing, dinghy sailing, rowing and kayaking as well as mountain biking possibly with hiring out equipment

• Golf

 Ten minutes from Trévoux the "Golf du Gouverneur" offers 18 holes courses and driving ranges to golf lovers.
