Musée des Jacobins


The Musée des Jacobins, located in Auch, was created the 16th of December 1793. It's one of the oldest museums in France. After being transferred from its original location in 1979, it is now housed in the former convent of the Jacobins classified as historical monument in the old town of Auch, between the banks of the Gers and the Cathedral Notre Dame.

The Museum of the Jacobins have 3 different levels. It offers a wide collection of 20,000 objects and works of art: from the Antiquity (Gallo-Roman and Egyptian) and the Middle Ages, pre-Columbian art, which is the second public collection France with about 8,000 works of art from Mexico and Peru, as well as popular traditions arts of Gascony including rare costume but also pottery of the Southwest of France.

The Musée des Jacobins also owns 'La Messe de Saint-Gregoire " which is the oldest picture of feathers preserved in the world dating back to 1539. In the recent years, the museum is also in a close collaboration with the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris.
