Tourism Aigues-Mortes

Aigues-Mortes is a city located in the department of Gard. The origin of its name comes from the fact that water has never been "sharp" but only  ponds and marshes are around it.

Historically, this town was considered a strategic point because it gave an access point to the Mediterranean. That is why many kings or Emperor was interested by it, and there pitched towers or walls. This was particularly St. Louis who began the construction of the walls surrounding the city.

Visitors will be impressed by the fortified city whose heritage dates from the thirteenth and fourteenth century is very well preserved. You can take a walk on the ramparts and discover the different towers. Chapels and churches are also memories of those times.

Thus, from the ramparts, the city offers a magnificent view over the marshes, which in the sun, have fascinating colors.
