Exposition : la machine dans la cour - le radeau de la méduse

To mark the filming of a documentary on the history of the shipwreck of the Medusa in 1816, a replica of the famous raft, immortalized by Géricault, was carried out based on all available sources.

Presented in the museum courtyard, this machine as he was nicknamed the survivors, is a scale replica of the one built in the sinking raft of the Medusa. The raft measuring 20 X 12 m, in all, the usable area is reduced to 18 x 7m. The set weighs 16 tons.

The raft is an assembly of masts and spars bound by ropes and nails, and consolidated with planks placed across coarsely.

It allows to take the measure of the space where 147 men are crowded, lack of sufficient space in the boats the edge.
