Tourism - Jura



Jura is a French department that is part of the Franche-Comté region. It is surrounded by the departments of the Doubs, Haute-Saône, Côte d’or, Saône-et-Loire and Ain, as well as the Swiss County of Vaud. Major towns are Lons-le-Saunier, Dole et Saint-Claude.

The tourism industry is an important part of the economy in Jura. The estates of Chalain and Vouglans offer various activities on their 2 large lakes, such as swimming, sailing and fishing; the lake being natural in Chalain and artificial in Vouglans. Countryside holidays is developing almost everywhere in Jura where foot paths are numerous and where outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, horse riding and caving are proposed. Winter sports are also an important tourist attraction above 800 metres with cross-country skiing in Foncine-le-Haut and in Chapelle-des-bois as well as alpine skiing in the resort of Rousses.

There are several cultural events happening in summer time in Jura such as the ‘Estivales des Orgues du Jura’ a festival reuniting vocal and instrumental performances with Organ, taking place in Haut-Jura in June. The 'Bouche à Oreille' Festival a culinary festival taking place each year the last two weeks of July and that moves places each day. And finally, the Music Festival of Haut-Jura in June.
