Tourism - Haute-Loire

Haute-Loire is a department that is part of the Auvergne region located in Central France and surrounded by the departments of Loire, Ardèche, Lozère, Cantal, and Puy-de-Dôme.

A region of highlands, old granite plateaus of the Margeride, cliffs and rocks from the Bassin du Puy , from Mounts Velay and Massif Mezenc to the Allier, the main tourist attraction here is the outdoor activities with: walking, cycling, climbing, horse riding, fishing, paragliding, and bungee-jumping.

Haute-Loire is also one of France's most religious departments. There are many Renaissance churches and Black Madonnas found everywhere in the region. Made of walnut or cedar wood, the Madonnas were brought back from the Orient by the Crusaders. Head to Le Puy-en-Velay to see a copy of Louis IX's Black Virgin.

Le Puy is surrounded by valleys and is known for its top quality green lentils.
