Bas-en-Basset was a Gallo-Roman town and was one of the first harbour on the lower part of river Loire. Richelieu had the fortress to be demolished and the town was included in the Forez shire in 1789.


The castle of Rochebaron

The castle of Rochebaron is one of the most picturesque in Velay. It looms over the town at 653 m high. The town is located at the boundaries of the Haute-Loire and the Loire and at the very southern part of the Forez shire. It used to belong to the Forez shire but then was included to the Haute-Loire in 1789. It is now part of the county of Bas-en-Basset 30 km of Saint-Etienne and 50 km of Puy-en-Velay.
