Auvillar

Auvillar is in the center of a very tourist area, ideally located between the two seas, and close to the Pyrenees.
Thousands of tourists pass by Auvillar, throughout the year, and come to saunter in its lanes, and to admire its old monuments, to finish on the place of the Castle, with its superb point of view on the valley of the Garonne.
The city is also a big step on the way of Saint-Jacob de Compostelle, and the lodging of stage, with 18 beds, désempli not. There are many rooms of hosts and several lodgings which allow to accomodate the tourists under good conditions. The village has 6 points of restorations and a hotel with restaurant.
Lastly, more than twenty association, of many festivities are organized throughout the year: the folk festival of Saint-Noah in May or June, the contest of painting, August 15 and Saint John's daies, splendid fire of the artifice on the Garonne, the secondhand trade in July, potters in October, the market of Christmas in December, etc .....

The visitor arrives on the place of the clock, where you enter the old city by the door Arnaud OTHON, the name of a Viscount of Auvillar. This door is surmounted by a tower called Tower of the clock. This is an elegant construction of the time of Louis XIV out of stone and bricks; the doors and the fenètres are in semicircular arch and each stage is decorated mouldings excavated in brick. The roof in attic is surmounted by a wrought iron cage. The bell comes from the old convent of the Jacobins and carries an interesting Gothic inscription.

Let us pass under the tower of the clock and while skirting the street of the clock, we reach the place of the Market In the middle of this triangular place is raised the Market, curious circular building on Tuscan colonnades with a central building of whichthe  blind arcade in full center is remarkable by its symmetry. The building, though relatively recent (1824), is of certain interest because of l' originality of its circular plan. At the interior, two types of corn measures:
- ones of metal dating from the construction of this market,
- the others cut in the stone come from l' old rectangular market which was previously in the center of the place.

Among the religious establishments, it is advisable to mention the church Saint Pierre, probably contemporary of the first Viscounts of Auvillar after work of the Pottier canon. It would have existed already in 1186, priory Benedictine and parish church, it is under the dependence of the abbey of Moissac until the XIIIrd century. To dated November 20, 1261, the priory is attached to the abbey of Farmhouse-Attic and that until the Revolution. After demolishbeing successively partly demolished, rebuilt, it is currently parish church. Classified the historic building, it is one of the most beautiful churches of the diocese of Montauban.

Auvillar has an old artistic and cultural tradition. At the XVIIIth century, until the beginning of the XXth century, Auvillar was famous for its faîences. You can admire the splendid ones with the museum. Another single activity was the clothes industry of goose feathers for the writing. Painters knew to find The inspiration in our city, such Davach and Thèze and Miss Vergnes. Today, Auvillar again accomodates ceramists and painters. The tourist office organizes a contest of painting the last weekend of July. A residence of the artist with considering the day in the Port of Auvillar, and receives painters, writers, musicians, photographers, poets, from April to October. Two galleries of the art are present at Auvillar, the gallery has 7, place de la Halle, and the gallery of the Garage of the sadoul.
