Signes of the air, fire, water and ground

Green lung of the Toulon-native agglomeration and the Marseilles metropolis, preserved tumult of the big cities and seaside resorts, Signes niche on the Southern slope of the solid mass of Sainte Baume and overhangs the basin of the Coast Of Provence which extends from Blackcurrant in Saint Mandrier sur Mer.

uccession of steepsided valleys, broad plains, plates fixed on the hills, tops climbing with more than thousand meters of altitude, of regs and river curving between the reliefs, the soil signois remains marked seal of rurality and this at less than one half an hour of the Mediterranean coastline.

Historical past, present dynamics and considered future intersect in a harmonious developmental perspective whose Signoises and Signois are the actors.

The community signoise, more than thousand-year-old, will accomodate you in all seasons with proud simplicity and the kindness bourrue of people from here, under the splendid lights of authentic Provence.

• Religious heritage:

Signs has an exceptional religious heritage. Indeed, the village was a long time property and vacation resort of the bishops of Marseilles.

You will discover: the Church Saint Pierre (classified), the vaults Saint Jean (ex-voto), Notre Dame of the Nativity known as Chateauvieux or the Distant one, Notre Dame of the Annunciation known as the Close relation, Clear Saint, Holy Name of Jesus (current room of the congregation).

Four others disappeared or were transformed.

• Village inheritance:

The heart of the village of Signs is punctuated places in charge of history, calades (small inclined lanes), fountains and laundrettes.

You will see on the place of the Market Alphonse Rousset the Fountain with the Witches (classified), on the place of the same name the Fountain Holy Jean (1767), on the place Garnier the Fountain of the Salt box (17th century), in the street Ferrayette the laundrette, always used (to take time to read the posted payment), the Tower of the Clock, the street of the Furnaces, the street Rompicul

• Necropolis Main road of Resistance:

Signs was also a high place of resistance to the occupant Nazi during the second world war.

The duty to remember will take you along to the steles of Limate and the Cistern of the Government on the solid mass of Siou Blanc and with the Necropolis Main road of the Mass grave of Signs in the small valley of the Martyrs, at the bottom of Sainte Baume.

Signes is the most extended commune of the department of the Var and most wooded: wood and forests cover more than 11.000 hectares on an total surface area of 13.310 hectares. Walks, ballades and excursions of all levels propose the lovers of nature:

• Starting from the heart of the village: three circuits of the oratories (the Authenticate, the Resident of Toulon, the Country one)
• Near: throats of Latay, solid masses of White Siou, Limate, Agnis, the valley of Raby, needles of Valbelle;
• A little further: solid mass of Sainte Baume, the valley of Gapeau and Chartreuse de Montrieux.
• To announce the passage of the paths of great excursion GR. 9 and GR. 99.

The community of the trailer cards found a new ground OF venture, with SZignes the Trail, set up by Samuel Bonaudo.

Signes accomodates a few hundreds impassioned of sport and nature for Trail of the year. Two courses are proposed: one (approximately 24 km) very accessible for walkers and runners from all levels, the other (longer) is reserved to the specialists in the trails.

The notoriety of the Signes Trail is acquired since many years thanks to the contest of the municipality of the Plan of Aups, which pleasantly authorizes us to cross its remarkable natural spaces making it possible to the participants to evolve on privileged sites.
