This is the capital of the Country of the Bressuirais scrap-metal which includes the cantons of Bressuire, Cerizay and Mauléon. The city is member and accomodates the seat of the Community of common Heart of the Scrap-metal with the Communes of Chiche, Faye-l' Abbess, Courlay and Boismé.

The structure of the downtown area suffered much from the wars of the Vendée and only some masonries testify before the XVII century; the downtown area today date especially of XVIII and XIX century. However there remain some buildings remarkable on the agglomeration:

  • Castle of Bressuire (XI century). this is a strong castle with ditches and walls, recently renovated. The home in its center is Néo-gothique (part worth visiting in the days of the exposure)
  • Church Notre-Dame (X century) with (XII century) surmounted a Gothic bell-tower of 56 meters which dominates the city and which does not pass unperceived when you arrive to North. Renovated since 1999 following the storm of December,  old murals were revealed there.
  • Church Saint-Porchaire (XV century)
  • Municipal museum
  • Vault Saint-Cyprien (X century) which lays out a crypt.
  • Cloister Notre-Dame (old convent of the cordeliers) accomodating an animated crib.
  • Green casting, installation of the banks of the Dolo river in pedestrian paths and of stroll with bicycle, allows in the middle of the town of feel on 3 km far from civilization and of lthe agitation of the world, in full nature.

Museum of Bressuire

The Museum of Bressuire, classified Museum of France, is a museum the art and the history installed in the old attics with grain of the city. In addition to old furniture, documents and works d' local artists, it presents a beautiful collection of primarily French earthenware from XVII to the XIX century.

The city having sheltered workshops of potters (in the district of Saint-Porchaire) since XV century, a series of current ceramics representative of the local production until the XX century is exposed.

Bressuire is also the birthplace of the glassmaker and vitraillist max Ingrand (1908-1969) and the museum will present soon flagstones of glass and stained glasses of this artist recognized universally.

These permanent collections (on the 1st floor) are in reorganization. They are visible only groups of them (10 people minimum).

Discovered tour of Bressuire

Located in the north of Deux-Sevres, Bressuire is the second commune of this department after Niort: it counts  today nearly 20.000 inhabitants. Bressuire combines a dynamic economic activity and a dense associative network. The first testimonys on the existence of the city go back to XI century, around the Saint-Cyprien vault.

At the beginning of the tourist office, this discovered circuit allows you to traverse the city in all autonomy thanks to a beaconing on the ground and a booklet of accompaniment which you will be able to get for the tourist office.
