Cusset

The brochure 'De Flâneries en Découverte' will allow you to discover the history of Cusset, its heritage, houses, and unusual sites. From the Medieval Cusset to the Thermal Cusset, this brochure will explain it all and is available at the Office of Tourisme. 

The 'Musée de la Tour Prisonnière' or the Prisoner Tower Museum is set up in the only one of the five artillery towers located in the fortifications of Louis XI. It became a prison in the 16th century and remained a prison until 1960. The tower became the Museum of Cusset in 1980 and remains one of the most major historical vestiges in Cusset housing sculptures, paintings and other art collections notably the Jean de Doyat's coat of arms and a letter signed by Louis XI in 1482.

The fortifications of Cusset, made of stone and earth, were entirely surrounded by a vast pit filled by the river Sichon of which the basements, cleared up since, can be visited together with the Museum.

Four circuits are available:

• The Jonchere: For a countryside as well as a urban tour covering the areas of Cusset, Vernet and La Verniere
• The Reposeau: discover Grivats and the Reposeau
• Chassignol: on the bank of the Le Jolan River
• Les Justices: admire the hills of Cusset
