Castle saint-ulrich

Château Saint-Ulrich (alt. 530 m) is the largest and best preserved of the three castles of Ribeauvillé.
Also called Rappolstein, Gross Rappolstein, or Ukrichsburg, it was built towards the middle of the thirteenth century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley Strengbach and received successive enlargements, the most remarkable consisted in adding a wing proportions grandiose, consisting of two huge rooms arranged one over the other and lit the side of the Levant by a double row of windows 7 twin semicircular.
If the St. Ulrich has little military character, it is a fine example of stately home.
Ribeaupierres residence until the fifteenth century, it is one of the finest achievements of secular art in Alsace.
In the sixteenth century, the castle fell into ruin through neglect, although it is still a small garrison at the beginning of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). In the seventeenth century, the castle is on fire.
Today, it still impresses with its proportions. The currently visible remains date back several times:
- The square tower and the main building are dated from the twelfth century
- Knights hall and the large residential tower of the thirteenth century
- The inlet and the outer wall of the Barbican are fourteenth century
- The Chapel of St. Ulrich is dated fifteenth century.
