National automobile museum - the schlumpf collection
Prestigious internationally recognized museum, the Cité de l'Automobile has some 430 exceptional vehicles. These models, including 150 Bugatti, are presented in a fun and interactive spirit with, among others, animations, videos, simulators, shops and playgrounds ...
Originally the museum is located, Fritz Schlumpf, wealthy Swiss industrialist, who is passionate about French and European automobiles. His wealth allows him to buy, from the 60s, more than 500 models he stores in Mulhouse in one of its mills in disaffection. Restricted to a closed circle of privileged people, this unique collection has been very long overlooked by the general public.
In 1977 the Schlumpf brothers industrial empire crumbles. Workers decided to occupy the abandoned factory where they discover its treasures. They then open the museum to the public for two years. At the initiative of Jean Panhard in 1981, an association was formed to save the collection and the museum reopens in 1982.
